Every May, the spotlight shines on the incredible work of veterinary nurses across the UK as we celebrate Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month (VNAM), organised by the British Veterinary Nursing Association.
Here at St Kitts, we’re proud to mark the occasion by celebrating the dedication and compassion of our whole nursing team – including student veterinary nurses (SVNs), registered veterinary nurses (RVNs), and animal nursing assistants (ANAs). Each plays a vital role in patient care and the smooth running of our practices.
What is VNAM?
Originally launched in 2005 as National VN Day, the event quickly grew into a month-long celebration that raises awareness of the valuable role of veterinary nurses within the profession. It’s a chance to inform the public, recognise the skillset of VN teams, and inspire those considering a future career in veterinary nursing.
This year’s theme, ‘Progression’ is all about how veterinary nurses grow, develop and shape their careers – something we see in action every day at our practices in Basingstoke, Hartley Wintney, Crookham Park and Yateley.
The role of a veterinary nurse
There’s often a misunderstanding about the true role of our veterinary nurses. What many people don’t realise is that they are absolutely central to everything we do. Their responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Monitoring anaesthetics
- Assisting in surgery
- Carrying out nurse clinics
- Providing post-operative care
- Offering client education and support
They are also trained in areas such as nutrition, dentistry, physiotherapy, and behaviour, allowing them to give tailored advice to owners and improve the welfare of every animal in their care.
Alongside them, our animal nursing assistants work hard behind the scenes to support the veterinary and nursing teams. From cleaning and preparing equipment to comforting patients, managing stock and assisting with basic animal care, their contribution ensures every patient receives the highest standard of attention.
Supporting student veterinary nurses
As a training practice, we work closely with student veterinary nurses (SVNs), supporting them through placements and helping them put their learning into action. Training to be a veterinary nurse is no small feat – it requires a combination of academic study and hands-on experience, often while juggling shifts in a busy practice.
Our experienced RVNs are passionate about mentoring and are always on hand to offer guidance and encouragement, helping students build their confidence and hone their skills. We also support animal nursing assistants who are exploring the next step in their career, offering insight into the profession and opportunities to develop their knowledge.
Celebrating the team
Over the years, we’ve seen many of our SVNs progress through their training and qualify as registered veterinary nurses. We’re proud of every one of them – from our newest recruits to those who’ve been with us for many years.
